On 26 February in Budapest, in the Kalvin Square subway there was a prayer with the motto "Gospel in the subways". There were poor people, youth and many passers-by that joined attracted by the songs and the words of the Gospel.
In the cold Hungarian winter, many homeless people that live on the streets find shelter from the cold and manage to survive precisely in the subways.
Recent Hungarian legislation prohibited our homeless friends from being in these places and that is why praying together was a joyful and human response that counteracts the climate of widespread contempt for the poor. So in the subway resounded for the first time the prayer and the songs of the Community, with the Gospel at the centre: Jesus gathers us and calls us friends because he cares for and appreciates everyone's life, without any preferences of persons. We can all become friends of Jesus, just by listening to his Word, a word that comes close to everyone.
Around the icon of the Holy Face gathered a small nation, an alliance of the poor, young people, volunteers, friends and passers-by showing the power of hope, acceptance and love for others.
A peaceful but strong way to say no to the climate of intolerance and racism that is infiltrating more and more in society and also in the Hungarian legislation. |
