EDITORIAL

The appeal is broadcast by all major Italian TV channels in these days, it is in thousands of post offices and in Venice � the goal of tourists from all over the world � it can be found on steamboats, monuments and inside public offices. Its text is simple and clear: Stop the death penalty, sign!

The campaign of the Community of Sant�Egidio against the death penalty continues, the collection of signatures quickly reaching quota five million.
Many people send their answer to the appeal: by post or the internet their signatures arrive, and also letters of solidarity, expressions of esteem and support.

With a signature many people choose for life � a gesture which is clear in its extreme simplicity � but in these days there are also some news bringing new hope: Guatemala has put an end to executions upon the Pope�s request before his visit to the country, and Turkey has abolished the death penalty just a week ago.

Just as we register these steps forward, in other places executions do not stop. We now know the story and faces of some of the people killed, no little number of them. The appeal for their preservation began on our website. The sorrow for the lives lost and the joy for the ones saved combine together creating a new feeling: the strong and conscious determination not to stop before the death penalty is defeated.

Memorial of the apostle Bartholomew of Cana of Galilee. His body is kept in the church of St. Bartholomew on the Tiberian Isle, at Rome, which has become the place of the memorial of the �new martyrs�. Remembrance of Jerry Essan Masslo, South African refugee in Italy, guest of the Community of Sant�Egidio. He was violently killed by bandits. With him we remember all people.
