Pacem Kawonga, activist of DREAM, the project carried out by the Community of Sant'Egidio for the treatment of AIDS patients, will receive the international award "Golden Doves for Peace" 2013, on its 29th edition, awarded by the Archivio Disarmo. The ceremony will be held at 17.30 on Tuesday, July 2 at the MAXXI, the National Museum of XXI Century Arts, located at number 4 of Via Guido Reni.
In memory of Rita Levi Montalcini, who chaired the jury of the Award for 16 years, the 2013 award will be given to four women: besides Pacem Kawonga, the international prize will go to Asha Omar Ahmed, a Somali gynecologist, who graduated in Italy but returned to his country where she now directs the hospital "Giacomo De Martino". For the section journalists, "Golden Doves" will go to Paola Caridi, founder of the Independent Journalists Association "Lettera 22" and to Zanardo, blogger and author of the documentary "The body of women".
Pacem Kawonga, coordinator of one of the centres of the Community of Sant'Egidio in Malawi, is a reference point for those who, suffering from AIDS, face, in addition to physical suffering, social discrimination and exclusion. For the last few weeks, she has been in Italy to present her book "A better tomorrow for my children”. The DREAM project, active in 10 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, has helped 1.5 million people, including more than 36,000 children under 15. As a result of the prevention program, 21,000 children were born healthy. |
