ROME - His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk, Major Archbishop of Kyiv- Halyč, primate of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, will preside over a prayer for Ukraine organised by the Community of Sant'Egidio, today at 20.30 in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere. The Community has been present for years in Ukraine, in Kiev and Lviv and in other areas of the country.
In an interview with Vatican Radio, the archbishop said that after the recent violence in his country "a healing process" started in which the Church is in the forefront to bring relief to the suffering: "Our cathedral in Kiev, as well as other Christian churches, have become hospitals and operating rooms too”. After expressing gratitude for the pope's repeated calls for a ceasefire, mons. Shevchuk expressed the opinion that the project to divide the country to save at least part of the regime "has already failed".
