The sixth conference of bishops, priests and religious friends of the Community of Sant'Egidio on the theme "Evangelii Gaudium: Prayer, the poor and peace in the words of Pope Francis". took place from 15 to 18 July in Jakarta.
From every part of the great Indonesian archipelago, about eighty participants gathered for three days of fellowship, listening and reflection, from the words of the Pope in the Apostolic Exhortation and in the recent visit to the Community of Sant'Egidio.
Together with the Indonesian bishops, Bishop of Frosinone Mons.Ambrogio Spreafico took part together with a delegation of the Community of Sant'Egidio from Rome.
An opportunity of meeting and dialogue, of testimonies of Christian life in the suburbs of major Asian cities such as Jakarta, or in the vast and sparsely populated areas such as Borneo, where rapid economic development has exacerbated inequality and increased poverty.
But they were also days when it was possible to live the friendship with the poor concretely, joining the service for the homeless of the community of Jakarta to discuss the changes in Indonesian society, where new problems emerge related to the impetuous economic development, such as that of isolation and abandonment of the elderly and the arrival of migrants and refugees from other Asian countries such as Sri Lanka and Pakistan, but also from Sudan and Nigeria.
