Also in summer, I need you. With these words, in the past weeks, the Community of SantEgidio pointed out the problem of the elderly who are living this summer a time of deep loneliness, especially in big cities.

Too often, there have been reports about the dramatic stories of lonely old people, found dead after a long time. In summer, as people leave the cities empty, the elderly stay at home and lack reference-points, meetings and support. If they undergo some illness, a small home accident or have any need, loneliness becomes a tragedy whose consequences are sometimes irretrievable.

Is it possible to do anything? In some Italian cities, the Community activated hotlines for help and distributed guides with useful addresses. These tools are also available on our site.

But our proposal also includes small actions that anyone can make in order to support a person in need: knocking at the door, finding out that mail was not picked up for some time, reporting something anomalous in a word: giving up indifference.

For this reason we say to anyone receiving this newsletter: in summer, I need you. It is beautiful to be addressed such words, while we often feel so irrelevant. Maybe, very few, small actions of ours can really save a life or, at least, make it less sad. And who saves a life, saves the world.
