A delegation of the Community of Sant'Egidio met European Parliament President Martin Schulz on 29 October in Brussels. During the interview, extremely friendly, they talked on the crisis in the Middle East, with particular attention to the situation in Syria and to the appeal for the city of Aleppo promoted some time ago by Andrea Riccardi.
We focused on the issues of poverty and social exclusion in Europe, as well as the need to take decisive action in favour of refugees from the wars that reach the European continent. Another theme was that of dialogue between religions and cultures, whose importance was highlighted in a time marked by war and tensions. Just in the month of September, the annual meeting of prayer for peace, joined also by President Schulz, was held in Antwerp. Both sides expressed willingness to strengthen cooperation on issues of peace, dialogue and fight against poverty. |
