In some German cities, the youth of the Community of Sant'Egidio invited their schools to make a gesture of humanity and welcome. In different schools and in the squares of the cities of Berlin, Würzburg and Mönchengladbach, young people laid flowers to remember the terrible shipwrecks in the Mediterranean in recent days, reading the stories of some refugees. Many were the boys and girls that joined the initiative to oppose the "culture of indifference", of which Pope Francis spoke during his visit to Lampedusa, and to reiterate the need for greater commitment by the European institutions to welcome the refugees and to prevent other massacres.

The initiative of the Community of Sant'Egidio was also joined by many "new Europeans" and the families of the children of the "Schools of Peace". Many of them come from Syria, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Iraq. The initiative will continue in the coming days extending to the city of Munich and other German cities.
