"I greet the Bishops friends of the Community of Sant’Egidio, coming from various countries in Europe, Africa and Asia. I urge them to operate with enthusiasm to serve the Gospel, notwithstanding the difficulties they might meet during their mission."
These were the words Pope Benedict XVI addressed to the bishops coming from Africa, Latin America, Middle East and Asia, at the end of His speech. The Bishops gathered in Rome for a Conference with the Community of Sant’Egidio, titled “Church of everyone, especially Church of the poor” in the year of the 50th anniversary of the opening of the 2nd Vatican Council.
The Pope spent some time discussing with some of them, those who come from countries living a difficult time due to political tensions or from countries where religious freedom and coexistence represent a challenge, such as Nigeria, Syria, and Indonesia. He also warmly greeted non-Catholic bishops who took part to the conference.
