EDITORIAL

Mozambique, Malawi, Kenya, Congo ...there is a lot of Africa in the Sant'Egidio's Web Site these weeks. Surely the presence in Rome of many African Heads of States, who were discussing the problem of hunger in the world, contributed to attract the attention of many on the extreme poverty and on the great need of the African Continent. During these days also became clear that the international efforts to curb these problems is indeed limited.

Africa is always in the hearth of the Community. The many initiatives undertaken by Sant'Egidio in the continent, as the recent one to fight the grave famine that is ravaging Malawi, are a clear example of it. Another example was the ceremony held by president Chissano of Mozambique. During a familiar and moving ceremony he inaugurated a commemorative plaque in the room of Sant'Egidio where, for two long years, were held the negotiations that finally lead to the end of the civil war in his country.

Many stories, faces, places that are too often forgotten, have a special place here. They are not only clients or beneficiaries of a all Western solidarity, and this would not be little. They are on the contrary the main actors of that resurrection of Africa that Sant'Egidio believes in and for which it struggles and works.
Africans are in fact the doctors that care for the handicapped in Goma, invaded by lava, Africans are the home care assistants of the program against AIDS in Mozambique as Africans are also the teachers of the Schools of Peace. In fact, "nobody is ever so poor not to be able to help others".

That the hearth of Sant'Egidio beats in Africa is also witnessed by the fact that from today the Web Site "speaks" another language, the most wide spread language of Central-Eastern Africa: Swahili
