The Community of Sant'Egidio expresses its deep satisfaction at the recent statements made by head of the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC) Salif Sadio, who said he would respect the agreement signed on 22 February 2014 at Sant'Egidio, relating to "mutual confidence measures" that commit the parties to
"engage in conduct that could help the negotiations for the return of peace in Casamance and reduce the suffering of the people". Sadio said he had imposed on his fighters a "unilateral ceasefire", as implementation of the commitments made.
The implementation of the commitments made by both parties is proceeding encouragingly; the agreement on the "mutual confidence measures" provides for the free movement of members of the MFDC in the context of peace negotiations, and the Community of Sant'Egidio notes that this commitment has been maintained by the Government of Senegal; from February to now, the leadership of the MFDC has organised two meetings with the population, related to the peace process, made possible thanks to the commitments entered .
The Community of Sant'Egidio welcomes the efforts that both sides are making, and continues its commitment to a definitive solution to the conflict in Casamance.
