La Herradura is a rural area a few miles from the capital San Salvador, which includes a few small fishing villages.

Here the Community of Sant'Egidio began a program of distances adoptions that granted more than 200 children access to medical care,  school attendance and a dietary supplement.

However due to the economic crisis and the frequent floods that destroy the harvest, food prices have increased greatly.

Our local representatives have recently found that the children were frequently sick , and often during the lessons were tired and not very focused because, at times, they came to school with an empty stomach.

To address this problem they have thought of creating two school canteens that open every day: one for 40 kindergarten children and the other in the school Guadalupe where about 160 children can eat.

The school directors have helped in the construction of two pavilions that are used as dining rooms, and with the support of the distance adoption program they can buy the food.

The preparation is entrusted to the mothers of our children, who are committed to cook on a weekly rotating basis. The menu is varied and follows nutritional parameters for the children.

With little has been possible to do very much! You can already see the first results: the children feel better, they go to school regularly and also their level of concentration and learning lessons has improved.
