Cameroon: Growing effort to let the life in prison be more humane
24th may 2011
The Community of Sant’Egidio is carrying on the project to enhance the Cameroon prisoners’ living conditions. The first aid are the basic ones, among those the mattresses. Yet many prisoners are sleeping on the ground.
After the interventions in the prisons of Maroua and Douala, mattresses and basic hygiene items were distributed in Mbalmayo, in the South, during the month of April, and in Gaoura, just a few days ago.
The conditions there are horrible: almost all the 150 prisoners have scabies, due to the lack of basic hygienic conditions. To improve it, the Community also organised training on health education: after that, a group of prisoners were put in charge of controlling the health conditions. The exercise is run every day.
Last 1st, 2nd and 28th May, 100 brand new mattresses were given to rejoicing prisoners and staff members.
